Take, for example, the glittering neon lights and electronic contraptions of Studiopolis, an area themed after a television studio in a big city. These new zones are particularly impressive: the theming and level design in each is colorful and creative, and I was eager to run around and explore, finding all sorts of challenges (and easter eggs) within. You’ll see classic zones from Genesis-era Sonic games, like Chemical Plant, Stardust Speedway, and Lava Reef, alongside all-new areas like Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon. Sonic Mania is proof that no matter how much time passes, great gameplay is always in style.Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are back to fight Eggman’s forces the best way they know how: running, jumping, spindashing, flying, and gliding their way to victory across twelve zones. With Sonic Mania, Sega brings Sonic back to his classic 2D sidescrolling roots, taking direct inspiration from the 16-bit games that originally propelled Sonic and friends to superstardom. How would you all rate the zones? Same as me or different? I see a lot of discussion about the game as a whole (which is great), but it's hard to find talk about each of the zones specifically. He’s had his fair share of ups, downs, and loop-de-loops, but Sonic has proven to be one of gaming’s most beloved and enduring icons. A little like Chemical Plant, it's only here because the bar was set so high by every other zone before it (and TMZ after it). Weakest zone in terms of memorability but I didn't hate this zone whatsoever. I did like the gimmicks but not one of my favourites by any means. A great opener to the game with cool music in both acts but not one of my highlights. Not to join the Green Hill bandwagon, but it was kind of just "there" for me. The level just left me with much to desire out of it, but the bosses were fun and the remastered music was badass too. I love Hydrocity to death and it's the best classic water zone of all time. Didn't hate it by any means but the standard of the other zones had been set so high already. Great zone, great boss, but the first act was a little meh. The music was phenomenal in my opinion for both acts and both of the bosses were quite challenging too. Also kind of got a Bioshock vibe from the city backdrop in Act 1. In terms of a final zone this is far better than the likes of Scrap Brain and Wingfortress, and it gave me Eggmanland vibes as if it was Unleashed in 2d. The level itself was great but the layouts were quite forgettable. Still, a very good zone with brilliantly composed music, especially Act 2. Only reason why this isn't any higher is because the main boss is a piece of cake and I'd basically already seen every inch of Act 1 since last year. The only reason it isn't higher, much like Studiopolis, the main boss was far too easy. Amazing backgrounds and very cool level assets brough from the Mystic Cave-esque floors of Act 1 to the Quartz Quadrant elements in Act 2. Utilizes the fire shield quite well, similarly to Green Hill, with a killer Act 2 remix that made my jaw drop.Īnother level I was desperately hoping to return and boy, did it return. Say what you will about Oil Ocean, but this level was absolutely badass in its second act. Had a blast throughout the very different versions of both acts and I love the elements they brought in from so many past levels that didn't make the cut. It really made up for missing Ice Cap Zone (due to obvious reasons) and developed on the frosty theme much better, in my opinion.īrilliant music and one of the best bosses in the whole game. I instantly resonated with both versions of the music, switching from the printing press to the snowy garden in the same zone was awesome too. I love Act 2 and it's very interesting usage of elements from Wacky Workbench to Wingfortress, with a boss that was genuinely challenging at first.Ī totally unexpected zone that soon grew into one of my favourites. Was was basically my favourite classic zone of all-time was made even better in Mania. Knuckles and Sonic/Tails versions differ which make it even more of an expansive zone. For me:īy far one of the greatest Classic Zones ever conceived and one of the most interesting in Mania. Might as well discuss the greats and not-so-greats while the levels are still fresh in our minds.
